In gesprek met: Kerry Taylor (veilinghuis Kerry Taylor Auctions, Londen)

Haar veilinghuis komt regelmatig in de media in verband met topstukken van beroemdheden zoals Princess Diana en Audrey Hepburn. Maar wie is Kerry Taylor? En waarom is haar veilinghuis zo succesvol? Een gesprek met deze bijzondere vrouw: “Ik word vaak echt persoonlijk geraakt. Hoewel het om stukken textiel gaat, zorgen de verhalen achter sommige kledingstukken dat ze van grote betekenis worden.”

“Wie houdt er nu niet van vintage?” Zo begint mijn gesprek met Kerry Taylor in het hippe Londense Bermondsey, waar haar veilinghuis is gevestigd. Taylor maakte kennis met mode via Hollywood. “Als kind was ik gefascineerd door de jaren ’30 films van Busby Berkeley en zijn prachtige meiden met veren hoofdtooien en schuin op de draad geknipte japonnen à la Madeleine Vionnet.”

Bepalend voor haar carrière was een schoolreisje naar het Victoria & Albert Museum in Londen. Het museum stelde een geborduurd korset uit de 17^e eeuw ten toon. Daarnaast stond een portret uit 1610 van de vrouw die het kledingstuk daadwerkelijk had gedragen. “Op dat moment voelde ik een connectie. Het tentoongestelde korset maakte het zo persoonlijk. Het bracht het tweedimensionale figuur op het schilderij volledig tot leven.”

Snelle veilingwereld

Taylor wilde naar de mode academie maar werd per ongeluk op de opleiding voor beeldende kunsten geplaatst. “Ik nam een jaar vrij en ging op mijn 19e in dienst als receptioniste bij veilinghuis Sotheby’s. Ik raakte gefascineerd door de snelle veilingwereld. Ik ben er 23 jaar gebleven.”

Ze beschrijft de dag dat iemand binnen kwam met een avondjurk uit de jaren ’20. “Ik was totaal gefascineerd door de schoonheid ervan. Niemand anders op mijn afdeling kraaide ernaar. Opeens kreeg ik een visioen: ik besloot een afdeling voor verzamelaars op te zetten en werd het jongste afdelingshoofd bij Sotheby’s ooit. Ik was 21.”

Met haar eerste modeveiling in 1985 had ze meteen een verkooprecord te pakken. Het ging om een geborduurd fluwelen kostuum, compleet met vest, overjas en rijbroek uit 1751 van de Black Rod van Ierland, een officiële functionaris uit het Britse Hogerhuis.

Maar begin 2000 keerde het tij. Net als enkele andere veilinghuizen besloot Sotheby’s zich meer te gaan richten op kunst en juwelen. Textiel en mode leverden niet genoeg op en werden afgestoten. In deze roerige tijden vertrok Taylor bij Sotheby’s.

Kerry Taylor Auctions

De stap naar een eigen veilinghuis voor vintage mode was een logische. “Ik heb altijd al een ondernemersgeest en een passie voor mode gehad.” En zo hield Kerry Taylor Auctions in 2004 haar eerste veiling.

“Het was een enorm succes. Al mijn oude klanten waren mij gevolgd. We hadden zeldzame stukken uit de 17^e eeuw, verfijnd Engels naaiwerk en allerhande andere mooie dingen. Ik moest mezelf echt even knijpen. Hier stond ik, het werk te doen wat ik het allerliefste deed en ik werd er nog voor betaald ook!”

Persoonlijk betrokken

Opvallend is de persoonlijke betrokkenheid van Taylor. “Ik denk dat mensen zich nu pas beginnen te realiseren hoe zeldzaam en uniek sommige stukken zijn. Ze hoeven niet te zijn gedragen door een bekend persoon, het kan ook gaan om een fantastisch stuk van een ontwerper of om zeer bijzonder vakmanschap.”

Een van de duurste stukken die Taylor ooit verkocht was Princess Diana’s verlovingsjurk van Elizabeth Emanuel (die later ook haar trouwjurk ontwierp): meer dan EUR 200.000. Ze komt met een anekdote over hoe Lady Di’s diepe decolleté eerst door Charles en vervolgens door de volledige roddelpers werd veroordeeld. Uiteindelijk kocht de Chileense verzamelaar Jorge Yarur Bascuñán de jurk, directeur van het Museo de la Moda in Santiago, Chili. Taylor: “Toen het bod was gevallen, sprintte ik naar de telefoon om erachter te komen wie de bieder was. Jorge zei tegen mij: Kerry, ik wil dat je iedereen laat weten dat als ik overlijd, ik deze jurk zal teruggeven aan haar zoons. Toen ik terugkwam in de veilingzaal, stonden de tranen in mijn ogen.”

Maar haar favoriete stuk is nog altijd het pak waarmee de Engelse Koning James II in de 17^e eeuw zijn Italiaanse bruid Maria van Modena aan de kust van haar nieuwe vaderland ontving. Vol liefde beschrijft ze het bruine, wollen pak dat bedekt was met zilver en gouden Brussels kant en de achterliggende geschiedenis. Het pak behoort nu tot de collectie van het Victoria & Albert Museum. “Als ik het in het museum zie dan ervaar ik weer diezelfde sensatie die ik als klein meisje ervoer bij het zien van dat 17^e-eeuwse korset. Ik ben ontzettend trots dat ik bij deze aankoop heb kunnen bemiddelen.”

De jacht op stukken wordt moeilijker. “Mensen verkopen steeds vaker hun kleding via sociale media. Maar omdat ik nog altijd de beste vintage modeveilingen ter wereld heb en een vaste klantenkring, krijg ik de mooiste en grootste collecties aangeboden. Klanten betalen voor mijn kennis. Als ze bij mij iets kopen, kan ik ze garanderen dat de stukken zorgvuldig gecureerd en echt zijn. Er is tegenwoordig zoveel nep.”

Clientèle

Tot Taylor’s clientèle behoren alle grote musea en modehuizen ter wereld. En niet te vergeten: luxe vintage dealers, uit Londen als New York en Hollywood. Die gooien er vervolgens een flinke premie op. Je kunt je vintage Dior jas dus maar beter direct bij Kerry Taylor kopen. Media regularly associate her auction house with celebrity fashion, such as Princess Diana and Audrey Hepburn. who is Kerry Taylor? And why is her auction house so successful? A conversation with this special woman: "I am often personally touched. "Who does not love vintage?" This is how my conversation with Kerry Taylor starts in trendy London Bermondsey, where her auction house is located. Taylor became acquainted with fashion via Hollywood. "As a child, I was fascinated by the 1930s films by Busby Berkeley and his beautiful girls with feather headdresses and bias cut dresses à la Madeleine Vionnet."

Defining for her career was a school trip to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The museum displayed an embroidered corset from the 17^th century. Presented next to it was a portrait from 1610 of the woman who had actually worn the garment. "At that moment I felt a connection. The corset on display made it so personal. It brought the two-dimensional figure in the painting to life."

Fast auction world

Taylor wanted to go to fashion academy but accidentally enrolled in the course for visual arts. "I took a year off and started working as a receptionist at auction house Sotheby’s when I was 19 years old. I became fascinated by the fast auction world. I stayed there for 23 years."

She describes the day that someone came in with an evening dress from the twenties. "I was totally fascinated by its beauty. No one else in my department crowed at it. Suddenly I got a vision: I decided to set up a department for collectors and became the youngest department head at Sotheby's ever. I was 21."

With her first fashion auction in 1985 she immediately had a sales record. The item concerned was an embroidered velvet suit, complete with vest, overcoat and breeches from 1751 of the Black Rod of Ireland, an official from the British House of Lords.

But the tide turned in 2000. Like a few other auction houses, Sotheby's decided to focus more on art and jewellery. Textiles and fashion were not profitable enough and were closed down. In these turbulent times, Taylor left Sotheby's.

Kerry Taylor Auctions

It was only a small step to her own auction house for vintage fashion. "I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for fashion." And so Kerry Taylor held her first auction in 2004.

It was a huge success. All my old customers had followed me. We had rare pieces from the 17^th century, refined English needlework and all sorts of other beautiful things. I really had to pinch myself. Here I stood, doing the work I did most dearly and I was paid for it too!"

Personally involved

Particularly striking is Taylor’s personal involvement. "I think that only now people are beginning to realise how rare and unique some of the pieces are. It does not have to be worn by a famous person; it can also be a fantastic piece by a designer or very special craftsmanship."

One of the most expensive pieces Taylor ever sold was Princess Diana's engagement dress from Elizabeth Emanuel (who later also designed her wedding dress): more than GBP 192,000. She comes up with an anecdote about how Lady Di's deep cleavage was first condemned by Charles and then by the entire tabloid press. In the end the Chilean collector Jorge Yarur Bascuñán, director of the Museo de la Moda in Santiago, Chile, bought the dress. Taylor: "When the bid fell, I sprinted to the phone to find out who the bidder was. Jorge said to me: Kerry, I want you to let everyone know that if I die, I will give this dress back to her sons. When I returned to the auction room, I had tears in my eyes."

But her favourite piece remains the seventeenth century suit with which English King James II received his Italian bride Maria of Modena on the coast of her new homeland. Full of love she describes the history and details of the brown, woollen suit that was covered with silver and gold Brussels lace. The suit now belongs to the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. "When I see it in the museum I experience the same sensation as when I saw the 17^th century corset as a child. I am very proud that I was able to mediate this purchase. "

The hunt for pieces has become more difficult. "People increasingly sell their clothes through social media. But because I still have the best vintage fashion auctions in the world and a regular clientèle, I get the nicest and largest collections on offer. Customers pay for my knowledge. If they buy something from me, I can guarantee them that the items are carefully curated and genuine. There is so much fake nowadays. "

Clientèle

Taylor's clientèle includes all major museums and fashion houses in the world, not to mention luxury vintage dealers from London, New York and Hollywood. They put a hefty premium on it.
