Chillida & Balenciaga : “Looking through a Magical Door”

Altijd al ben ik geïnteresseerd geweest in kunst en mode (van begin 15e tot de 19e eeuw). Onderwerpen die zich op de grens tussen mode en kunst bevinden vind ik vooral interessant. Toen ik tijdens een lunchpauze buiten het Rijksmuseum liep zag ik het werk van Spaanse kunstenaar Eduardo Chillida (Eduardo Txillida  Juantegui). For English see below.

Ik stop voor een dubbele deur die je uitnodigt om doorheen te gaan. Verbaasd en blij ontdek ik dat deze uitgesproken moderne sculptuur van Chillida een eerbetoon aan de Spaanse couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga is.[1] Chillida noemt veel van zijn werken 'Homenajes' (eerbetuigingen of eerbetonen) gewijd aan verschillende kunstenaars, schrijvers, filosofen en vrienden als een teken van zijn genegenheid, respect en bewondering. De eerste expliciete eerbetuiging was aan Vivaldi in 1951. Het sculpturale eerbetoon aan Balenciaga kan binnen de reeks Homenajes worden geplaatst.

Ik werd nieuwsgieriger naar het werk van Chillida en zijn relatie tot Balenciaga. Zodoende vond ik een poster die in 1987 door Chillida ontworpen was voor een tentoonstelling om Balenciaga te huldigen in Palacio de Miramar in San Sebastian, Spanje. De volgende ochtend werd ik wakker en moest ik aan mijn bezoek aan Londen de vorige winter denken. Ik had toen de tentoonstelling 'Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion' (2017-18) in het Victoria & Albert Museum bezocht.

Ik herinner me dat ik afgeleid werd door de Envelop-jurk ontworpen door Balenciaga. Ik kon het niet laten om een verbinding te zien met de hedendaagse kunst van Chillida. Chillida's werk karakteriseert zich door 'grijpende vormen' die in open ruimtes worden geplaatst om de natuurlijke omgeving te accentueren terwijl Balenciaga met zijn gedurfde ontwerpen veroorzaakte een doorbraak in hoe mensen over mode nadachten en wat men als mode beschouwde. Balenciaga's ontwerpen werden gekenmerkt door de sculpturale kwaliteit, manipulatie van textiel en dramatisch gebruik van kleur en textuur. Zijn dramatische vierpuntige Envelop-jurk is een experiment in kledingvorm. Balenciaga speelt met de gebruikelijke vormen en creëert zo nieuwe architectonische vormen in de damesmode. De jurk werd getoond in het jaar voordat de couturier zijn modehuis in 1968 sloot. Hoewel het een grote hit was bij de mode-pers, werden er slechts twee verkocht, waarvan één werd teruggestuurd omdat de klant niet kon achterhalen hoe naar de badkamer te gaan vanwege de extreme smalheid van de onderkant.

Chillida's monumentale sculptuur Buscando la Luz IV in 2001 (Searching for Light IV) was de laatste van een reeks sculpturen van deze omvang die geproduceerd werden door de kunstenaar tijdens zijn laatste creatieve periode.[2]  "Samengesteld uit drie asymmetrische verticale stalen platen met elkaar verbonden door een complex klinksysteem, overspoelt de aanwezigheid van het beeldhouwwerk het gebied. Eenmaal binnen in de binnenruimte van het werk lijkt de vorm bijna beweging te krijgen, oprijzend op zoek naar het licht."[3] Buscando la Luz IV was van 2002-2004 te zien in het Yorkshire Sculpture Park vóór de installatie ervan in het Guggenheim in Bilbao in 2006. Later was het te zien in de Royal Hospital Gardens in Chelsea, Londen, en verkocht bij veilinghuis Christie's in Londen in 2013. Nu staat het op een prominente locatie op de Qatar University Campus. 

Tot 23 september 2018 zijn er negen sculpturen van Chillida, waaronder de Hommage aan Balenciaga, in de Rijksmuseumtuinen te zien. Kom kijken door de “magische deur”, zo kun je precies zien wat ik zie! De lege ruimte tussen de twee blokken ijzer vormen een vrouwelijke silhouet. Een magisch eerbetoon aan Balenciaga! (Toegang tot de Rijksmuseumtuinen is gratis.)

I've always been interested in art and fashion (from early 15th to 19th century). Topics that cover both disciplines draw my attention. Walking outside the Rijksmuseum, during lunch break and looking to the work of the Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida (Eduardo Txillida  Juantegui), I suddenly stopped in front of a double door that invites you to pass through. Surprised and (most certainly) delighted to find out that this explicit modern sculpture of Chillida was a tribute to the Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. Chillida titled many of his works 'Homenajes' (homages or tributes) and dedicated them to different artists, writers, philosophers and friends as a sign of his affection, respect, and admiration. The first explicit tribute was to Vivaldi in 1951. The homage to Balenciaga can be seen in this serie of artworks.

I became more curious to know about Chillida`s work and his relation to Balenciaga. I started my own research and found the poster that was designed in 1987 as an homage to Balenciaga for an exhibition that was held in Palacio de Miramar in San Sebastian, Spain. Next morning I woke up thinking about last winter when I went to London to an exhibition at London's Victoria & Albert Museum 'Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion'. I remember that I was distracted by the Envelope dress designed by Balenciaga. And I couldn`t resist to make a connection with Chillida`s contemporary art.

Chillida's work is characterized by 'interlocking forms' placed in open spaces to accentuate the natural environment while Balenciaga provoked with his daring designs a breakthrough in how people thought about fashion and what they considered fashion. Balenciaga`s designs were characterized by the sculptural quality, deft manipulation of textiles, and dramatic use of colour and texture. His dramatically four-pointed Envelope dress is an experimentation in garment shapes, stepping away from the body as a template for form, using it instead almost as a display stand for new architectural shapes in women’s fashion. The dress was shown the year before he closed his fashion house in 1968. Although it was a big hit with the fashion press, only two were sold of which one was returned because the client couldn't figure out how to go to the bathroom in it due to the extreme narrowness of the bottom.

Chillida’s monumental sculpture Buscando la Luz IV in 2001, (also known as Searching for Light IV) was the last among a series of sculptures of this scale produced by the artist during his final creative period. “Composed of three asymmetrical vertical steel plates linked together through a complex riveting system, the sculpture's presence engulfs the area. Once inside the interior space of the work, its form almost appears to acquire movement, rising up in search of the light”. Buscando la Luz IV,  was displayed at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park from 2002-2004 before its installation at the Guggenheim, Bilbao in 2006. Later on view at the Royal Hospital Gardens, in Chelsea (London) and sold at Christie's auction house in London in 2013. Installed now at a prominent location at the Qatar University Campus.

Nine sculptures of the artist, including the Homanage to Balenciaga, can be seen in the gardens of the Rijksmuseum (free access) till 23 September 2018. Come and see through the "magic door". So you can see exactly what I see!  The empty space between the two iron blocks forms a female silhouette. A magical tribute to Balenciaga!
